How to Buy a Car

So, you've read up on how the Derby works and now you're ready to buy a car kit and get started. lucky for you, the Derby Headquarters are only a four-hour drive away so delivery time for your order is quick.

All car kits and parts are ordered through the All-American Soap Box Derby, the sanctioning body for Derby racing worldwide. AASBD is located in Akron, Ohio and can be reached by visiting their website. After you get to the new site, click on the Shop Now link.

If you are a new driver or race team, you are going to want to order a car kit, so over on the "Browse Store" area, click on Stock or Super Stock, then click on 'Kits'. If you're buying a Super Stock kit, there is only one choice. If you're buying a Stock kit, you hvae a choice of colors, currently, there is only white and red available. (You cannot paint Stock car bodies, but you can put stickers or wrap them)

Add that to your cart.

Your kit contains everything you need to race -- except wheels. From  your shopping cart, click "Continue Shopping" and you will be taken back to the previous page. Add a set of Z-Glas Racing wheels to your cart.

Weights

The only other items you might need are weights. Derby cars are allowed to have weight placed inside them to bring up to the max weight. There is floor weight and adjustable weight. A completed Derby car weighs approximately 60 lbs. Add in the weight of the driver, then subtract that number from the max weight allowed. 200 lbs for Stock and 230 lbs for Super Stock. The result is the amount of weight you need to put in the car.

Adjustable weight should be about 10 lbs. Subtract that amount and the remainder should be floor weights which come in horseshoe weight and seat weights -- both of which are 10 lbs each, when you purchase from Akron. Purchase a combination of both floor and seat weights to make up the total added weight you need.

That's all you need to order. Choose Ground Shipping and you order should arrive in two business days.

You can build a car in as little as two hours but most people can get it completed in over a weekend.
